Mephastophilis or Mephistopheles is a Hebrew name in origin, constructed from 'mephiz' meaning destroyer and 'tophel' meaning liar. Mephastophilis is a fallen archangel, one of the Maskim or 7 great princes of Hell. He was known to the infamous Cornelius Agrippa as 'an enthroned angel of the holy Jehovah'. Generally, Mephastophilis is regarded as an agent for Satan or Lucifer, as is the case in the Faust legend where he secures the soul of Faust on behalf of Lucifer.
